I’m a pediatric OT & mom, and I think we seriously underestimate what toddlers are capable of.

We’re in Texas and dealing with an ice storm, so outdoor play is basically off the table right now. But toddlers still need to move. A lot.

On days like this, I stop trying to keep things calm and instead focus on getting the energy OUT in a safe, controlled way. This stair slide gives big movement input, builds confidence, and helps regulate those winter wiggles when we’re stuck inside.

Movement doesn’t stop just because the weather does. We adapt.

A lot of this stage isn’t about how much your baby eats. It’s about learning how to eat.

Scissor skills don’t start with cutting ✂️

As a pediatric OT & toddler mom, this is the exact progression I use to teach scissor skills without frustration or pressure. Cutting requires hand strength, bilateral coordination, motor planning, and the right setup, not just “practice cutting lines.”

Messy cuts are still learning.
Struggling doesn’t mean behind.
Most kids master scissors closer to 4–6 years old.

Hi, my name is Olivia and I’m a pediatric OT + toddler mom 👋

If you’ve been googling “is this normal toddler behavior?” this reel is for you.

The behaviors you saw,
They’re signs your child’s brain is growing.

Toddlers are in a stage where their emotional brain is developing faster than their thinking brain. They feel everything intensely, but they don’t yet have the wiring to pause, regulate, or choose a better response, so it comes out as resistance, big emotions, & confusing behavior.

And yes… it’s exhausting.

So what does actually help?

It doesn’t mean fixing the behavior.
It means supporting the nervous system behind it.

When they say no to everything 👉🏻 offer choices instead of commands.
“Blue cup or red cup?” gives them control without chaos.

When they push you away then cling 👉🏻 stay emotionally available.
“I’m right here when you’re ready.” That builds secure attachment.

When they do the opposite of what you ask 👉🏻 model the action instead of repeating yourself.
Toddlers learn through doing, not lectures.

When they melt down 👉🏻 get low, soften your voice, slow your breathing.
Your calm becomes their calm.

When they laugh when you’re upset 👉🏻 name the feeling instead of punishing it.
“That feels uncomfortable, huh? I’m here.”

This is why yelling, time-outs, and threats don’t work long-term, they shut down the nervous system instead of teaching it.

Regulated adults raise regulated kids.
And you’re already doing more than you think 🤍

Toddler shoes are for kids who are already walking confidently and need more durability for running, climbing, and playgrounds.

Wearing the wrong shoe at the wrong stage can make walking harder than it needs to be, which is why this matters more than most parents realize.

Pre-writing skills come before writing, and activities like matching + slotting help build the visual-motor and fine motor foundation needed for handwriting later on.

Toddlers learn best through movement, not worksheets. When they can see it, plan it, and do it with their hands, learning actually sticks. This is why hands-on play is so powerful in the early years.

I stopped telling my toddler to stop throwing… and redirected it instead.

Throwing is a developmental need, not bad behavior. When we meet that need with a safe, intentional setup, the throwing usually decreases everywhere else.

One reason I love open-ended play items like our @figgyplay play couch is that they grow with your child, today it’s a carnival-style throwing game, tomorrow it’s climbing, building, or imaginative play. One setup, so many skills.

• Keep it short + frequent (5–10 min goes a long way)

When to offer sensory input:

• Before transitions (leaving the park, bath time, bedtime)
• After screen time or quiet play
• When behavior starts escalating, not after it explodes

We had such a great time at A Berry Merry Christmas at @dewberryfarmtexas 🎄✨

My son’s favorite parts were the light show train ride, throwing snowballs, meeting Santa, and of course eating elf cookies. I loved that there was truly something for every age to enjoy. We even tried the paintball and apple cannons, which were so fun. Add in delicious burgers, chicken tenders, fries, and hot cocoa to keep us warm, and it made for the perfect holiday outing. This is the kind of experience that makes the season feel extra special 🤍

And one you’ll hear a lot?
“You need a baby walker.”

You don’t.

Baby walkers don’t teach babies how to walk. They limit floor time and skip over the skills babies need first strength, balance, and coordination.

What to do instead 👇
• Prioritize daily floor time
• Let your baby roll, crawl, and explore freely
• Encourage pulling to stand on safe, stable furniture
• Introduce push toys after your baby is already cruising
• Trust the process, milestones can’t be rushed

If you do choose to use a baby container:
• Use it sparingly (short periods, not daily dependence)
• Make sure your baby has head and trunk control
• Avoid devices that prop them upright before they’re ready
• Floor time should always outweigh container time

Babies don’t need to be placed into movement.
They need opportunities to move on their own.

I bought this back when bath time was a struggle and he wanted nothing to do with it.
But he’s always loved basketball, so I tried this hoop thinking maybe it would help…

It became the only thing that actually kept him in the tub without tears.
He’d shoot, splash, cheer for himself and I’d finally get through an entire bath without rushing.

Simple, no moldy parts, sticks to the facet, and he used it every night for months.
